### description
Basic school (szkoła podstawowa) has grades 1–8 and is divided into two stages: early education (grades 1–3 with one main teacher) and subject-specific teaching (grades 4–8 with specialist teachers). It replaces the old primary + middle school split.

**Two-Stage Structure:**

1. **Grades 1–3 (Early Education):** Integrated teaching with one main teacher delivering most subjects (Polish, math, foreign languages, PE, Religion/Ethics). Marks are descriptive rather than numerical. Teachers not required to follow strict lesson format.

2. **Grades 4–8 (Subject-Specific Teaching):** Subject specialists teach separate subjects. Marks are numerical (1–6 scale, where 6 is excellent). One teacher serves as class tutor (wychowawca).

**Age of Entry:**
- Compulsory from age 7
- Can start at age 6 if parents request and child shows school readiness
- Earlier entry possible with positive opinion from psychological-pedagogical counseling center
- All 6-year-olds must complete preparatory year (zerówka) before starting grade 1

Enrollment is based on address (catchment). Out‑of‑area places depend on availability. Every pupil is entitled to free Polish-as-a-second-language support and additional remedial classes when needed.
