### description
Preschool (przedszkole) is for children aged 3–6. It prepares kids for school with play-based learning, speech therapy, and social development. A preparatory year for 6‑year‑olds (zerówka) is compulsory and can be completed in a preschool or primary school.

**Context:** Before preschool, children aged 0–3 can attend nurseries (żłobki). These are optional care managed by the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, not the education system. Nurseries accept children from 20 weeks old (sometimes from 12 months) to 3 years old.

Foreign children are accepted in preschools on the same conditions as Polish children. Small children learn Polish quickly through immersion, often faster than adults.

### benefits
**Lower costs**
Public preschools offer 5 free hours daily. Additional hours cost maximum 1.44 PLN per hour (as of September 2024). 6-year-olds attend free regardless of duration (parents pay only for meals).

---
**Extra support**
Speech therapy and integration options available. Foreign children may benefit from additional Polish language instruction provided informally during kindergarten hours.

---
**School readiness**
Preparatory year (zerówka) prepares for grade 1. Compulsory for all 6-year-olds before primary school entry.

---
**Municipal help**
Subsidies and meal support for families. Families with low income can apply for meal subsidies or fee reductions via the municipal welfare centre (MOPS).

---
**Flexible scheduling**
Children can be in preschools from 08:00 to 17:00. Some preschools offer extended hours from 06:30 to 19:00. Half-day options available (until 14:00).

### Admission Criteria (Public Preschools)

Children are accepted based on points awarded for:
- Parents working officially (registered at Labor Office also counts)
- Large family (with Large Family Card - Karta Dużej Rodziny)
- Sibling already enrolled in same preschool
- Children of preschool employees
- Parents studying full-time
- Parents paying income tax in city where preschool is located
- Single parent/guardian

**Documents for Points:**
- Application (wniosek)
- Tax declaration (PIT) for previous year (both parents)
- Employment contract (both parents)
- Vaccination record (if required by preschool)
- Additional documents for large families, siblings, etc.

### common mistakes
**Missing enrollment window**
Track municipal dates; recruitment usually starts in February or March. Check preschool and municipal websites regularly.

---
**No address proof**
Provide rental or registration confirmation (zameldowanie), or a declaration from the property owner. This affects catchment area placement.

---
**Forgetting additional criteria**
Upload certificates for large families, disability, or siblings already enrolled to gain extra points. Every point increases chances.

---
**Skipping adaptation days**
Attend meetings so your child meets teachers and other children gradually. Adaptation helps reduce anxiety and smooth transition.

---
**Not updating waiting list status**
If status is "OCZEKUJĄCY" for 6 months, update your application to remain active. Check status regularly.

---
**Missing PESEL number**
Applications can be submitted without PESEL, but having it simplifies the process. Contact preschool if you need help without PESEL.

### checklist

**Child's birth certificate and ID/passport**
Bring original and copies. Translation may be needed if not in Polish/English.

---
**Parent's ID and contact details**
Both parents' identification documents and contact information.

---
**Address confirmation**
Rental agreement, utility bill, zameldowanie certificate, or employer letter confirming address in city/municipality.

---
**PESEL number for the child**
If available (applications can be submitted without it). Simplifies online enrollment process.

---
**Medical/vaccination card and allergy information**
Vaccination records if required by preschool. Important allergy information for meals and safety.

---
**Documents for points (if applicable)**
Tax declaration (PIT), employment contracts, Large Family Card, sibling enrollment proof, etc.

---
**Check enrollment dates.**
Municipalities publish online (usually spring). Note application deadlines and required attachments. Check both municipal and preschool websites.

---
**Choose up to several preschools.**
Rank preferences in the system (if online recruitment). Visit preschools to understand programs and facilities.

---
**Submit application.**
Online or at the preschool; attach required documents and sign consent forms (data processing, trips, photos). Print and sign within 10 working days.

---
**Monitor application status.**
Regularly check status on enrollment website. Wait for "NA LIŚCIE DO PRZYJĘCIA" status. Update application if waiting over 6 months.

---
**Results and confirmation.**
Accept the place within the deadline and sign the agreement/contract; pay the enrollment fee if required. Review contract details (hours, meals, activities).

---
**Adaptation.**
Attend orientation meetings. Provide medical certificates for special diets. Supply needed items (slippers, spare clothes, tissues). First visits often with parents present.
