Get Tax ID (NIP) in Poland

### summary
[💸](Free|Application)
[⏱️](1–7 days|Processing)

### description
**What is it?** A Tax Identification Number (NIP) is required for anyone doing business, paying VAT, or employing people in Poland. Individuals who already have a PESEL usually use that number for tax purposes, but if you run a sole proprietorship, act as a VAT payer, or represent a company, you still need a NIP.

> You can only have one NIP number in your lifetime, regardless of how many businesses you run or taxes you pay.

### Where to submit
- **Tax Office (Urząd Skarbowy)** — file paper forms in person or by post (recommended for first-time applicants)
- **Electronic** — submit NIP-7 or NIP-2 via [ePUAP](https://epuap.gov.pl/) or [Profil Zaufany](https://www.gov.pl/web/gov/zaloz-profil-zaufany) with a qualified electronic signature
- **CEIDG registration** — if you open a sole proprietorship via [CEIDG](https://www.biznes.gov.pl/pl/e-uslugi/00_0007_00) your NIP is assigned/updated automatically

### PESEL vs NIP — which one do you use?
- If you have a PESEL and settle only personal taxes as an employee or contractor, you generally use PESEL (no separate NIP needed).
- You need a NIP when you: run a sole proprietorship (CEIDG), register for VAT, employ people, act as a company representative, or you do not have a PESEL but need to pay taxes in Poland.
- Legal entities use NIP-2; individuals use NIP-7. Sole proprietors update NIP via CEIDG (one-window system).

### Terms and costs
- **Free** - no fee for the NIP application
- **PLN 17** - only if you use a special power of attorney (PPS-1)
- **Free** - if using a general power of attorney (PPO-1)
- **Processing time:** 1–7 days (online submissions are usually faster)
